IFPRI Commissions External Assessment of the Impact of the 2020 Vision Initiative

IFPRI has appointed Robert Paarlberg, professor of political science at Wellesley College and chair of the 1996 Internally Commissioned External Review of IFPRI’s research and outreach methodologies, to conduct an external assessment of the impact of the 2020 Vision initiative. Paarlberg will examine how the initiative has furthered knowledge about the global challenges facing food, agriculture, and the environment; communicated the challenges and action program underlying the 2020 Vision to diverse audiences around the world; and provided a forum for dialogue, debate, information sharing, and consensus building among policymakers, researchers, and members of nongovernmental organizations, the private sector, and the media.

Paarlberg will work under the guidance of an impact advisory committee, largely drawn from the International Advisory Committee. Sartaj Aziz, Minister of Finance in Pakistan, chairs the impact advisory committee. Other members are H. E. Speciosa Wandira Kazibwe, vice president of Uganda; Henry Kendall, professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Rebeca Grynspan Mayufis, former vice president of Costa Rica; and Joachim von Braun, director of the North-South Center for Development Research in Bonn, Germany.

Paarlberg asks that anyone who has an opinion to share on the contributions of the 2020 Vision initiative or who has observed policy and other effects stemming from the initiative’s research, workshops, publications, and other activities should contact him directly. He may be reached by phone at 617/283-2194, by e-mail at RPAARLBERG@wellesley.edu, by fax at 617/283-3644, or by mail at Wellesley College, Department of Political Science, Wellesley, MA 02181 USA.

The 2020 impact assessment report is expected to be completed by March 1999.
