2020 Advisory Committee Meets in Ghana
One mandate of the 2020 Vision initiative is to keep abreast of major developments that are likely to affect food security, the livelihoods of the poor, and the environment over the next two decades. On April 14–15 the 2020 Vision initiative convened the fourth meeting of its International Advisory Committee (IAC) in Accra, Ghana, to address such developments and to assess the initiative’s work. The meeting was structured as an international consultation on emerging issues in global food security, poverty alleviation, and natural resource management. Vice President John Evans Atta Mills of Ghana hosted the meeting, and Kibirige Sebunya, the Ugandan minister of state for agriculture, and J. J. Otim, special presidential adviser, represented the chair of the IAC, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda.The primary objective of the meeting was to pinpoint the knowledge gaps that need to be filled in order to realize the 2020 Vision, to delineate the next steps for the initiative, and to identify the action needed by the initiative’s partners. Committee members first reviewed the progress of the 2020 Vision initiative, discussed the report assessing the initiative’s impact (see page 7 for the report’s details), and provided guidance on how the 2020 Vision networks for East and West Africa can move ahead (see p. 2 for more information on the networks). The members then participated in a series of panel discussions on globalization and poverty; modern science for food production and natural resource management; water scarcity, land degradation, and climate change; food safety and health risks; governance and the changing role of the state; Sub-Saharan Africa as an emerging hot spot; and other emerging issues. The meeting concluded with a discussion of what the 2020 Vision initiative should be doing in all these areas.
