The 2020 Vision Network for East Africa, initiated by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in 1998, seeks to generate information and strengthen capacity to undertake and communicate policy research in order to reduce poverty and improve food security and child nutrition, increase agricultural production, and promote the sustainable use of natural resources through more appropriate and better informed government action.
A key aspect of this work is to strengthen the capacity for policy research and analysis among the next generation of researchers and analysts in the region. Proposals from Masters students whose thesis work addresses the established country research priorities are invited from the six member countries of the 2020 Vision Network – Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Uganda. The country research priorities are available on the Network website at www.ifpri.org/2020/nw/publications.htm#country or by contacting Jenna Kryszczun at IFPRI (j.kryszczun@cgiar.org). Students’ projects may or may not be linked to ongoing Network research activities. The deadline for submission of applications is August 1, 2002. A complete application package should be submitted (in hard copy and electronic format where possible) to the country team coordinator (see contact information on second page). The application package should consist of the following materials:
Proposals will be evaluated on their scientific quality and policy relevance, and two proposals will be chosen from each country. Students will be awarded US$1,000 to cover the costs of research activities such as literature search, fieldwork, data analysis, and so forth. The first tranche of funds will be disbursed when the student is ready to go to the field and submits an approved progress report, including the final version of the research proposal, a questionnaire or other data collection instrument, and information about the timeline for thesis submission, along with an approval letter from the thesis supervisor. At the end of their research projects, students will submit a copy of their thesis as well as a five- to ten-page report summarizing the research problem and its significance, purpose and objectives, methodology and research process, main findings, and policy implications. Remaining funds will be disbursed at this time. Quality reports and/or theses will be eligible for publication by the Network. For any additional information or queries, students should contact their country team coordinator and/or IFPRI. As noted above, the country research priorities are available on the Network website at http://www.ifpri.org/2020/nw/publications.htm#country or by contacting Jenna Kryszczun (j.kryszczun@cgiar.org).
