IFPRI Director General, Joachim von Braun, introduced IFPRI and its longstanding interest in Indian agricultural and poverty issues. The Director General focused in his short presentation on issues of mutual concern such as high-value agriculture, biotechnology, social safety nets, and trade reform. See briefing paper for more detail.

In his response His Excellency, Mr. Pawar, said that the issues outlined by the Director General are very close to his heart and stressed two additional key challenges to Indian agriculture: suicides among Indian farmers, which cause great human tragedy and losses among farming communities, and developing policy responses to the opportunities presented by biofuels.

Both parties agreed that this was a valuable exchange and IFPRI would address these issues with research in close collaboration with the Indian research community.
