Thursday, June 7, 2001
3:30 - 5:00 p.m.

Presented by Dr. Lester Crawford, Georgetown University

With the recent outbreaks of livestock diseases such as foot and mouth disease in Europe, food safety issues are at the top of the international trade and development agenda. The outcome of the WTO negotiations on food and agricultural trade will crucially depend on the understanding and agreement that developing and developed countries come to on food safety levels. Furthermore, developing-country food trade and market access will be influenced by the food safety standards set and accepted at the international level . This in turn will affect the economic growth of food exporting countries.

Dr. Crawford will address the actual food safety concerns in developed and developing countries. The recently implemented US reporting system has provided useful benchmarks for discussing food safety. The role of antibiotic resistance, food transportation systems, sanitation and preservation will be discussed. The evolution of food inspection and food decontamination systems will be presented. A prediction of the evolution of future food safety developments and the need for predictive science in this regard will conclude the presentation.
