Food Safety in Europe - Conflicting Policy Perspectives
Presented by:
Location: The European public seems to have lost its confidence in food safety. People worry about the possible health hazards of eating genetically modified (GM) foods and the potential long-term environmental repercussions of introducing GM crops. The remedy for these concerns, as proposed by the EU Commission, is more scientific evidence and stronger regulations. But will more and better information and controls on food safety restore public trust? Experience suggests that it will not, due to widespread skepticism about science-based governmental control systems. This policy seminar will address various aspects of food safety policy including risk assessment, risk management, and risk communication. It will try to present the conflicting perspectives in the European debates about food safety and will discuss ways of handling them. It will view the subject through a global lens by presenting the potential impacts of European food safety fears on developing countries. Kindly RSVP to 202-862-5610 or Email: L.Goldberg@cgiar.org. |
