Abstract
In response to the plight of millions of very poor women without access to financial services, a Microcredit Summit was convened in February 1997 in Washington, D.C. The Summit brought together close to 3000 delegates from 137 countries and launched a nine-year Campaign to reach 100 million of the world's poorest families, especially the women of those families, with credit for self-employment and other financial and business services by the year 2005. At the center of the Summit's Declaration and Plan of Action were four core themes: (1) reaching the poorest; (2) reaching and empowering women, (3) building financially self-sufficient institutions; and (4) ensuring a positive measurable impact on the lives of clients and their families.
Sam Daley-Harris, Director of the Microcredit Summit Campaign, will present findings from the Microcredit Summit Campaign Report 2001, and will raise key policy issues and challenges for the future. A copy of the Microcredit Summit Campaign Report 2001 is available at http://www.microcreditsummit.org/SOCreport2001.htm.
