Abstract
Food safety is receiving increased attention worldwide. The growing movement of people, live animals, and food products across borders; rapid urbanization in developing countries; changes in food handling and consumption; and the emergence of new or antibiotic-resistant pathogens contribute to altering both the nature and the incidence of food safety risks in the world’s interdependent food production and marketing system.

What are the key food safety issues that prevail today in food security and trade? How are developing countries affected by the strengthening of food safety control efforts by developed countries? What steps are developing countries taking to address food safety issues in order to improve food security and trade? What are the risks, benefits, and costs when such policies are implemented? To address these questions, IFPRI’s 2020 Vision Initiative has commissioned an authoritative array of 17 policy briefs and case studies from around the world that will be formally launched at this event.

Please join the editor, Laurian J. Unnevehr, and two distinguished authors, Spencer Henson and Luis Flores, in an informative and exciting panel discussion that will vividly illuminate the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead in the food safety arena.

Laurian J. Unnevehr is professor of agricultural and consumer economics at the University of Illinois; Spencer Henson is associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Business at the University of Guelph; and Luis Flores is former chief of inspectors of the Integral Program for Agricultural and Environmental Protection in Guatemala.
