Abstract

Growing crises and controversy are plaguing the fish industry worldwide. With more people consuming more fish than ever before, the world's oceans are being overfished and fish farming is threatening surrounding waters and even wild fish stocks. Given this troubling picture, what is the outlook for fish in the global food system over the next two decades? What are the key food safety and trade issues influencing the supply and demand for fish? Can an environmentally sustainable fish industry that also serves poor people be developed? Can new technologies and improved policies in both developed and developing countries help create a thriving and sustainable fish industry?

To address these and other pressing questions, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and The WorldFish Center have jointly undertaken, using a state-of-the-art model of the world food system, a comprehensive, first-of-its-kind, economic analysis of world fish markets and their interactions with pressing trade, health, poverty alleviation, technology, and sustainability issues through the year 2020. Please join the authors and other distinguished experts in an informative and rich panel discussion that vividly illuminates the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead for the world fish industry and fish consumers.

Copies of the book and accompanying summary report and issue brief will be available at the event.
