SUMMARY Prevention, care, treatment and mitigation are the four pillars of response to the HIV/AIDS crisis. Each one of these strategies demands a focus on food and nutrition security but rarely is this comprehensively applied. This review aims to summarize the growing evidence behind this assertion and to suggest approaches for developing more HIV-responsive food and nutrition-relevant policies and programs. The rationale is two-fold -- to organizationally scale up the response to the AIDS pandemic, and to help such programs achieve their original objectives.
