There is growing recognition that agriculture influences health, and health influences agriculture, and that both in turn have profound implications for poverty reduction. This suggests that opportunities exist for agriculture to contribute to better health, and for health to contribute to improved agricultural productivity. Yet, policymaking in agriculture and public health are often pursued in a parallel and unconnected fashion. Coherent, joint action in agriculture and health could have large potential benefits and substantially reduce risks for the poor. To better understand the linkages between these two vital sectors, IFPRI’s 2020 Vision Initiative commissioned an authoritative set of 16 policy briefs from leading experts around the world.
Please join the editors, Corinna Hawkes and Marie Ruel, and two distinguished experts, Per Pinstrup-Andersen and Robert Bos, to discuss how these linkages work, where do the opportunities for joint action lie and what are the impediments that need to be overcome, and how to strengthen synergies between agriculture and health and promote closer coordination.
Corinna Hawkes is research fellow in the Food Consumption and Nutrition Division at IFPRI; Per Pinstrup-Andersen is Chair of the CGIAR Science Council and Professor of Food, Nutrition, and Public Policy at Cornell University; Robert Bos is scientist in Public Health and Environment at the World Health Organization; Marie Ruel is director of the Food Consumption and Nutrition Division at IFPRI; and Joachim von Braun is Director General of IFPRI.
Copies of the 2020 Vision policy briefs will be available at the event.
