The pace of change in China during the past two decades has been dramatic. In the last 15 years, the prevalence of underweight and stunting among preschool children has greatly decreased, but changes in micronutrient status have been minor. At the same time, a rapid increase in lifestyle-related chronic diseases is emerging. Nearly one in three adults in China is overweight or obese, and the prevalence among children and adolescents increased five-fold between 1985 and 2000.
From a unique perspective as the leading national nutritionist during this period, Professor Chen Chunming will chart these changes and highlight the key driving forces as well as her own involvement in bringing the scientific evidence to the policy arena.
