Pinstrup-Andersen Receives Honorary Doctorate

WASHINGTON, D.C., December 19, 1996 For his outstanding contributions to the field of food security, the Zurich, Switzerland-based Swiss Federal Institute of Technology has granted Dr. Per Pinstrup-Andersen, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), an honorary doctorate.

In his nominating speech Vice Chancellor Professor Konrad Osterwalder said, "This degree a Doctor of Technical Sciences has been granted for Dr. Pinstrup-Andersen's outstanding contributions to research in the field of nutrition economics and for his dedicated leadership in the efforts to achieve worldwide food security, especially in the poorest nations."

"By awarding this honorary degree, we acknowledge (Dr. Pinstrup-Andersen's) research work, which is of fundamental importance to the fields of agriculture and food sciences," continued Osterwalder.

The degree was given November 23 at the Swiss Institute's annual meeting in Zurich, which was attended by 600 people.
