Atlas of the Ethiopian Rural Economy
2006

http://dx.doi.org/10.2499/0896291545

Produced by the Central Statistical Agency (CSA) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE), the Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI), and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)
About the Atlas

No comprehensive set of maps on the agricultural and rural economy in Ethiopia has previously been produced for wide distribution. This Atlas combines information and analyses of the Ethiopian Agricultural Sample Enumeration of 2001/02 with other data on rural Ethiopia to provide students, educators, policymakers, and interested individuals with a better and more up-to-date understanding of the spatial distribution of the characteristics and economic conditions of the people of rural Ethiopia.

Although a broad range of information is presented in the Atlas, the overriding focus is on the development of effective and sustainable policies to foster agricultural growth and rural development. The spatial patterns seen in the maps will provide the reader with insights regarding key geographic factors associated with the agricultural sector, thereby assisting in the development and in the geographic targeting of programs designed to enhance the productivity and profitability of farmers and herders throughout Ethiopia.

This Atlas is produced as an extension of collaborative work of the Central Statistical Agency, the Ethiopian Development Research Institute, and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) under the Ethiopia Strategy Support Program (ESSP) being coordinated by IFPRI. ESSP was established in 2004 with the support of several of Ethiopia’s international development partners to strengthen policy analysis and dialogue on the many agriculture and rural development issues facing the nation. This Atlas is part of the efforts being made under this program to integrate and disseminate existing knowledge on the rural economy in the country.
