Partnerships and Networks

RENEWAL is a network structured by partnerships. In addition to the core staffing of RENEWAL, these partnerships are flexible, responding to collaborative needs generated by projects and policy debates at local, national, regional and international levels. RENEWAL strives to establish common partnership platforms from which the three core pillars of the network and its projects can be effectively undertaken. This creates an important multi-directional learning process between all partners in the network. The network's membership is disciplinarily and geographically diverse which strengthens its functions - diversity which is reflected in the membership of the National Advisory Panels in each country.

In addition to the core RENEWAL team, there are at any given time many other research partners linked to the various ongoing studies. Various international research collaborators have also been, and continue to be, involved in RENEWAL and other collaborations. Among others, these include ICRISAT, ICRAF, Michigan State University, USA; Vrije Universiteit, Netherlands; Institute of Behavioral Sciences, University of Colorado, USA; School of Medicine, University of Indiana, USA; Department of International Health, Tulane University, USA; University of Colorado at Boulder, USA; Columbia University, New York, USA; University of Leiden, Netherlands; London School of Economics (LSEAIDS), Kennedy School of Government and Department of Anthropology, Harvard University, USA; World Bank

Connections have been established with the following regional organizations and networks: NEPAD, African Union, SADC, the Southern African Regional Poverty Network (SARPN), the UN Commission on HIV/AIDS and Governance (CHGA), the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa, IFPRI's 2020 Vision Network, the Southern African Migration Project, the INDEPTH network, and the Durban AIDS conference network.

Internationally, there have also been significant interactions and collaborations with key constituencies such as UNAIDS and country-level UN Theme Groups on AIDS, FAO, World Food Programme, UNICEF, WHO, World Bank, UN Standing Committee on Nutrition, Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, UNDP, UN RIACSO, UNECA, civil society groups (including Oxfam, CARE, Save the Children), Rockefeller Foundation, International HIV/AIDS Alliance, Global Health Council, and bilateral agencies including SIDA, IDRC, USAID, UK DFID, Government of Norway.

RENEWAL, from time to time, also draws upon resources from an informal International Support Group (ISG) of persons with expertise in field research in agriculture, nutrition and public health. These individuals - many of whom have already participated in RENEWAL activities - will increasingly work alongside country stakeholders, providing advice and mentoring where this is desired. ISG members will in particular assist in developing frameworks, refining methods, peer-reviewing proposals, and enhancing capacity through both formal and less formal means.

Finally, key stakeholders and partners in RENEWAL are its donors (or investors). RENEWAL 2 is fortunate to be supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the Rockefeller Foundation, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and USAID Food for Peace. Other supporters, to whom RENEWAL is also indebted, include Government of Norway, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), UK Department for International Development (DFID), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the World Food Programme.
