John Pender leads IFPRI's research program on land resource management for poverty reduction. His research focuses on the impacts of policies, institutions and technologies on livelihood strategies, land management, agricultural production, poverty and natural resource sustainability in developing countries. His research has focused on the highlands of East Africa, hillsides of Central America and Indonesia, and drylands of West Africa and India. Pender joined IFPRI in 1995 after working as an assistant professor of economics at Brigham Young University. He received a Bachelor's degree from the California Institute of Technology, a Master's in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in agricultural and development economics from Stanford University. He is the author or coauthor of more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and was lead editor of the recent book Strategies for Sustainable Land Management in the East African Highlands. He is a U.S. citizen.
