Egypt: Field ActivitiesPreparatory Workshop held in August 1997. The workshop discussed the methodology and survey design for the project. Wheat Traders Study. A market survey of about 2,000 wheat and wheat flour traders and importers was conducted from July until December 1996 in 20 different governorates in Egypt. The results of the analysis were used to derive policy implications concerning the type of complementary measures the Government of Egypt can take to reduce marketing costs in the wheat sector and to facilitate and accelerate a private-sector-based marketing system. Milling Sector Study. This study will analyze the adjustment in the wheat milling sector in Egypt with specific focus on the government's policies and a comparative performance of both public and private sector mills. The analysis will be based on a survey of about 530 private and public mills over the period June 1997 to October 1997. The results of the survey will be used to identify imperfections in the wheat milling sector and to develop policy options to improve its performance. Market Price Formation Process. Data collection activities for wheat and wheat flour wholesale and retail prices were launched in June 1997 and will continue until May 1998. The price data set will be used for the analysis of the impact of reform on the price formation process in Egypt. Response of Wheat Producers to Market Reform. Data collection activities on wheat production will start in 1998. The data set will be used for the analysis of wheat producers' response to market reform and to complete the analysis of the wheat marketing sector in Egypt.
