Senegal: Research Tasks

The project had the following four main research tasks:

Marketing Policy Environment. The first task of the project was to take stock of existing policy objectives in the area of marketing, the policy instruments used to achieve them, and to find out how both were changing during the reforms.

Adjustment in Costs of Marketing. The second task sought to identify the structure and determinants of the costs of operating in local agricultural input and output markets, and how they are affected by the policies specified above.

Structure, Conduct, and Performance of Local Markets. The third task was to evaluate: i) the degree of integration and competition in agricultural input and output markets; ii) the response by private traders to changes in the policy environment and, particularly, their investment behavior; and iii) the facilitating and complementary measures the government can take to accelerate the reform process.

Price Response to Market Reforms. This task sought to estimate the effects of policy changes on incentives in the production sector and profitability and competitiveness of the processing sector.
