The guiding question for this research program is: What are the effects of alternative policy packages on economic growth and poverty alleviation in developing countries? The program investigates the impacts of alternative macroeconomic and trade policies and how these policies interact with sectoral and other micro policies, including targeted poverty interventions. Given that most of the poor live in rural areas, special emphasis is put on policies affecting agriculture and the non-agricultural rural economy. The research is undertaken at the country level or for regions within countries. Policies are considered within different time frames, ranging from short-run responses to economic shocks to the development of long-run, pro-poor development strategies. Recognizing the need to consider how the livelihoods of the poor are linked to the rest of the economy, the program emphasizes the use and development of economywide policy models and databases. Through collaboration with developing-country researchers and policy workshops, the program also aims to contribute to capacity building in policy analysis and to provide guidance in the design of policy reform. The ultimate objective of the program is to enhance understanding of how policies can be used to alleviate and eventually eradicate poverty.
