Volume 2, Number 1
October 1996

Welcome to the fourth edition of the Gender CG Newsletter. The newsletter is intended to be a hard-copy complement to the Gender CG Network, an electronic network that connects researchers working on gender and intrahousehold issues in the areas of agriculture, natural resources management, food security, and nutrition. Our membership now stands at 280, up from 183 almost one year ago. This edition reports on new topics discussed on the network since the beginning of 1996. In this copious edition, we revisit the discussion on contextualizing gender by focusing on the utility of the concept and its use for analysis in the field. This issue updates us on the Gender and Property Rights E-mail Conference and informs us about various publications, workshops, and position announcements of interest to our members.

Much discussion has taken place over the network since our last newsletter. We begin with an extensive discussion on the utility of gender that has recently mushroomed into a spirited exchange. Several interest- ing queries were tabled by students and colleagues at various universities and institutions to which fellow members gave timely and informative responses. It is encouraging to watch the network link queries to research findings across disciplines, institutions, and continents.
