Senior Programme Adviser, Socio-Economics/Gender

Duty Station: Rome
Date of Entry on Duty: as soon as possible
Level : P5

World Food Programme food aid is directed towards the goal of eradicating hunger and poverty. WFP formulated in 1995 its commitments to the Platform for Action on the Advancement of Women. The commitments provide the Programme with gender-specific goals to use its resources in interventions that seek to reduce the disproportionate effects of hunger and poverty on women, in particular, in two such areas where food as a resource can make a difference: (1) unequal access to and command over food resources by women, and (2) unequal access to asset/income-earning opportunities. WFP is also committed to addressing special nutritional problems faced by women and their children.

WFP is working through country- and region-specific gen-der action plans on agreements with governments and other implementing partners. The plans aim at more specific targeting of the needs of poor and hungry women and men in emergency relief and development operations, to ensure women's substantial voice in local decisionmaking committees on administration of food aid management and of the assets/ benefits created, and monitoring of the nature of their participation and benefits. WFP seeks to recruit a second socioeconomics and gender Programme Adviser to assist the Programme in meeting these commitments.

For additional information, contact Mr. Taieb Essayem, Deputy Director Human Resources, WFP, Via Cristoforo Colombo 426, 00145 Rome, Italy, FAX 39 6 52282831.
