Conference Announcements

The University of the South Pacific, Suva, Fiji, will host the 8th Pacific Science Association Inter-Congress from July 13 to 19, 1997. A special symposium, "Women, Science and Development: From Indigenous Knowledge to New Information Technologies," will be held under the auspices of the Pacific Science Association and the Gender, Science and Development Programme of the International Federation of Institutes for Advanced Study. The symposium will build on the work on gender in recent international fora, including the 1995 Beijing conference and the recommendations of the Gender Working Group of the U.N. Commission on Science and Technology for Development. Sessions will be organized around two major themes: Women, Science, and Indigenous Knowledge, and Women, Science, and New Information Technologies. On August 11-13, 1997, the "International Conference on Women in the Asia-Pacific Region: Persons, Powers, and Politics" will be held in Singapore. Organized by the Department of Geography, Southeast Asian Studies Programme, National University of Singapore; the IGU Commission on Gender; and the Commonwealth Geographical Bureau, the conference will focus on gender issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Some of the themes of the conference include the way gender issues relate to globalization and local knowledge; how gender is intertwined with race, class, and citizenship rights issues; the way rapid social and economic development affects women's lives; and how gender issues affect practical aspects of social life. Conference organizers have encouraged participation from a range of disciplines, including anthropology, Asian studies, cultural studies, development studies, gender studies, geography, history, law, political science, and sociology.
