SAKSS is expected to serve the information needs relevant to designing both regional and country-specific development strategies. At the regional level, SAKSS can help inform on options for generating economies of scale and regional growth spillovers, such as through greater economic integration, harmonization of standards, and shared investments in transportation infrastructure and agricultural research and development (R&D). As such, regional SAKSS nodes are being established in East, West, and Southern Africa. The regional web pages provide illustrations of analyses that can inform investment and policy options related to markets and trade as well as science and technology.
At the same time, country-specific SAKSS are being established in those countries where there has been a demand from national governments: Ethiopia, Ghana, and Uganda. A country-level SAKSS can inform on the impact of macro-level policies and sector-wide investments on rural economies as well as examine options for increasing the productivity and commercialization of smallholder agriculture. It is expected that the country SAKSS will be institutionalized within the relevant national ministries and planning units. The country web pages offer spatial characterizations of the rural sector as well as examples of analyses that provide information on the role of agriculture in the broader economy and the impact of commodity-based and thematic (i.e. infrastructure, education, etc.) investments.
Both the country and regional web pages will be updated as many of the analyses are updated.
